History of Our School…

1900

Early Beginnings

Mrs. Janet Poulier founded a small drawing-room school named Lawrence Villa in 1900.
She likely chose the name due to her interest in the life and work of St. Lawrence.
The school initially catered to both boys and girls.

1930

Transition and Expansion

The Poulier School flourished under Mrs. Janet Poulier’s leadership.
In 1930, she appointed her niece, Miss. Gladys Poulier, as her successor.
The school expanded, moving from Lawrence Villa to a new building across Galle Road.

Team Expansion

Over time the city of Colombo was dedicated to St.Lawrence
The first Catholic Church in Colombo was built in St. Lawrence’s name.
Fr. Robert Fernando also dedicated the new parish Church of Wellawatte to St. Lawrence.

1951

Catholic Church Ownership

Mrs. Poulier sold the school to Fr. Robert Fernando on the condition that it would remain an educational institution bearing the name of Lawrence.
The school came under the direction of Miss. Gozmao.

1953

Good Shepherd Management

The Congregation of our Lady of charity of the Good Shepherd took over the Management of the school. Mother Mary of St. Immaculate was the Provincial at that time. Mother Mary Finbarr as Principal, together with two other Good Shepherd sisters from the order, began shaping with great care the young minds and hearts entrusted to them. Good Shepherd sisters, led by Mother Finbarr, began their work at the school in 1953.

Changes and Growth

Sinhala, Tamil, and English classes ran concurrently.
New buildings, including a laboratory, replaced dilapidated classrooms.

St. Lawrence
(Patron Saint)

Saint Lawrence was one of seven deacons who were in charge of giving help to the poor and the needy. When a persecution broke out, Pope St. Sixtus was condemned to death. As he was led to execution, Lawrence followed him weeping, “Father, where are you going without your deacon?” he said. “I am not leaving you, my son,” answered the Pope. “In three days you will follow me.” Full of joy, Lawrence gave to the poor the rest of the money he had on hand and even sold expensive vessels to have more to give away.

The Prefect of Rome, a greedy pagan, thought the Church had a great fortune hidden away. So he ordered Lawrence to bring the Church’s treasure to him. The Saint said he would, in three days. Then he went through the city and gathered together all the poor and sick people supported by the Church. When he showed them to the Prefect, he said: “This is the Church’s treasure!”

In great anger, the Prefect condemned Lawrence to a slow, cruel death. The Saint was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that roasted his flesh little by little, but Lawrence was burning with so much love of God that he almost did not feel the flames. In fact, God gave him so much strength and joy that he even joked. “Turn me over,” he said to the judge. “I’m done on this side!” And just before he died, he said, “It’s cooked enough now.” Then he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus and that the Catholic Faith might spread all over the world. After that, he went to receive the martyr’s reward. Saint Lawrence’s feast day is August 10th.

School Anthem

Unfurl the banner Red and Gold,
Set it aloft for all to see,
Red for the toil, tears, trials untold
Gold for the crown of victory.

True to our Motto we’ll ever be,
For glory we shall solely seek,
By noble deeds done cheerfully,
With hearts magnanimous and meek.

Martyr bless the crown and palm,
Thro’ fiery torments thou didst win,
Preserve thy children from every harm,
Safe from the scorching flames of sins.

Pure heart of Mary’, neath thy care,
Keep us forever pure like thee,
Sweet heart of Jesus hear our prayer,
May thy heart be our sanctuary.

School of our girlhood years to thee,
We pledge our love and loyalty,
O red and gold, thro ‘triumph thro’ strife
Blazon our trail to endless life.

Unfurl the banner Red and Gold,
Set it aloft for all to see,
Red for the toil, tears, trials untold
Gold for the crown of victory.
