Jubilee Celebrations
On August 16, 2025, St. Lawrence’s Conventcelebrated 125 years of excellence with a magnificent Jubilee in the School Main Hall, beginning with a soulful Mass presided over by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith. This historic milestone was brought to life through an enchanting showcase of talent, featuring a specially composed hymn performed by alumna Jacqueline Hettiarachchi and the school’s vibrant choirs. Under the visionary leadership of Principal Rev. Sr. Mary Dilrukshi and Vice Principal Mrs. Umadanthie Jayamanne, the entire school community—including dedicated staff, the Past Pupils’ Association, and the PTA—united to execute a flawless tribute to their heritage. Far from just a milestone, this celebration marked the beginning of a new chapter for every Lawrentian, reinforcing a legacy that remains eternal, unshakable, and carved deep into the heart of time.

A new hymn was composed in Sinhala to commemorate the 125th Jubilee Celebrations of St. Lawrence’s Convent. The meaningful lyrics were penned by Bro. Ashen Nimantha Fernando, a Third Year Theology student at the Ampitiya Seminary. The beautiful melody was crafted by Ms. Ashwini Benedict and Ms. Ridmavi Anthony. Ms. Christa Perera skillfully coordinated the project.
The hymn was majestically rendered for the first time by Ms. Jacqueline Hettiarachchi, a distinguished guest artist and past Lawrentian, at the invitation of the Management of the school. She was accompanied by talented past Lawrentians Ms. Ashwini Benedict, Ms. Michelle Wickramasekera, and Ms. Nirandi Perera.

Our Story
Celebrating the Jubilee
St. Lawrence’s Convent marked its 125th year of excellence on August 16th, 2025, with a grand celebration in the School Main Hall. The highlight was a special Jubilee Mass celebrated by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
An enchanting entertainment segment followed, showcasing the talents of our young Lawrentians. A new hymn to St. Lawrence, composed specially for this celebration, was performed by past pupil Ms. Jacqueline Hettiarachchi with fellow alumni, while the school choirs and bands captivated the audience. To mark this historic occasion, the Postal Department issued a special stamp and first-day cover.
This magnificent day was masterfully organized under the thoughtful guidance of Rev. Sr. Mary Dilrukshi, our Principal, together with the dedicated efforts of Mrs. Umadanthie Jayamanne, our Vice Principal. Their leadership, combined with the invaluable support of Rev. Sr. Jennifer Fernando and the tireless commitment of the Sectional Heads, gave the celebration a sense of grace, precision, and unity. The dedication of the tutorial staff, was equally remarkable, most notably Ms. Deepa Dissanayake, Prefect of Games and a proud past pupil, whose contribution played a key role. The Past Pupils’ Association and the Parent-Teacher Association worked tirelessly, offering their time, resources, and creativity to enrich the festivities. Behind the scenes, the commitment of the minor staff ensured that every detail was handled with care and efficiency. These combined efforts ensured that the occasion was executed flawlessly from start to finish.
This Jubilee is not the end of a chapter, but the beginning of a greater story. One that every Lawrentian, past, present, and yet to come, is destined to write. As history was made within these walls, the legacy of St. Lawrence’s was carved deeper into time: eternal, unshakable, and forever ours.

The Birth of Flames of Faith
As St. Lawrence’s Convent marked its 125 years of excellence, the school administration was faced with
a beautiful challenge: how to celebrate not just a century and a quarter of success, but a legacy deeply
rooted in faith, compassion, and service. The solution came, not in the form of a grand feast or a simple
event, but through a dream—a dream to honour the patron saint of our city, St. Lawrence, in a way that
would resonate far beyond the walls of the school, reaching into the heart of Colombo itself. And thus,
the idea was born.
The visionary behind this dream was none other than Rev. Sr. Mary Dilrukshi. She, with an unwavering
faith and a burning desire to share the powerful life of St. Lawrence, took the bold step of transforming
this anniversary into an artistic expression of devotion. The challenge, however, was not just in
celebrating a historical figure but in making his story come alive for those who may not yet know the
depth of his heroism.
Flanked by Mrs. Umadanthie Jayamanne, the Vice Principal, and backed by a dedicated team of staff,
the decision was made: dance would be the medium of expression. For what better way to express the
soul-stirring journey of a saint whose life was defined by sacrifice, service, and unwavering faith, than
through the graceful and emotive power of dance?
To bring this vision to life, a masterful director was needed—someone who could weave together the
intricate movements and emotions of St. Lawrence’s extraordinary life. Enter Mr. Chandana
Wickremasighe, a name known for his ability to bring stories to life through performance. Upon hearing
the awe-inspiring tale of St. Lawrence, he was immediately drawn into the mission. His enthusiasm
matched the passion of those around him. This would not just be any dance performance—it would be a
tribute to a saint whose legacy deserved to be seen, felt, and understood.
But dance, as Mr. Wickremasighe knew well, could not exist without the music of the soul. So, in perfect
harmony, Mr. Peshala Manoj was called upon to craft the melodies that would carry the rhythm of the
saint’s journey. Together with Mr. Akila Danuddara, who would embody the saint himself, the
groundwork for Flames of Faith had begun.
Flames of Faith captured the essence of what this celebration was meant to convey. The goal was not
only to honour the saint but to inspire the audience to walk away with a deeper understanding of his
values—of courage, service, and faith in the face of adversity.
As rehearsals commenced, the students of St. Lawrence’s Convent poured their hearts into each
movement. Every leap, every twirl, and every step was a reflection of their dedication to honouring the
saint’s legacy. They practiced for hours, perfecting each gesture with joy in their hearts, knowing that
they were not just performing—they were becoming a part of something much larger than themselves.
Today, as you sit in the audience, what you witness on stage is not just a performance—it is the
culmination of countless hours of hard work, passion, and love. It is a labour of devotion, a dance of
faith, and a celebration of a life well-lived.
Our hope is that through Flames of Faith, you too will be touched by the life of St. Lawrence and his
Martyrdom. We hope you will witness the beauty of his example and be inspired to live the same heroic
life with fortitude, boundless compassion, and steadfast faith that defined him.
And as the final curtain falls, may the echoes of St. Lawrence’s legacy continue to resonate in your
hearts, guiding you toward a life of service, sacrifice, and unwavering joy in the pursuit of goodness.

Our Story
History of the Stamp
St. Lawrence’s Convent was founded in 1900 by Ms. Janet Poulier, a passionate educationist, in the drawing room of “Lawrence Villa.” The school grew steadily, and Ms. Poulier named it St. Lawrence’s School, inspired by the life of Saint Lawrence, a Catholic saint. Over the years, the school expanded, introducing new buildings, laboratories, and academic streams. In 1951, it was handed over to St. Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte, and the Good Shepherd Congregation Sisters took over its management in 1953. With dedication and commitment, the school has thrived, prioritizing Catholic values, academic excellence, and extracurricular achievements. The school’s rich history is marked by milestones, including the introduction of the Advanced Level section, Science stream, and English medium classes. Today, St. Lawrence’s Convent is a vibrant community of 1500 students, shaping well-rounded individuals who excel in various fields. The school’s legacy is built on the tireless efforts of its principals, teachers, students, and community, inspiring generations to strive for excellence, serve with compassion, and forge meaningful relationships. With a strong foundation in faith, academics, and values, St. Lawrence’s Convent continues to empower students to reach their full potential and make a positive impact in the world.
